Itinerary:
DAY 1: VIENTIANE MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO PAKXANE VIA PHOU KHOU KHOEY NATIONAL PROTECTED AREA
We kick off our adventure with an exhilarating ride from Vientiane to Pakxane. The journey takes about 4-6 hours, depending on the group’s pace, and provides an opportunity to get a feel for the roads and acclimate to the adventure ahead. We begin by riding through the vibrant streets of Vientiane, gradually leaving the bustling city behind as we head into the countryside. Our route takes us through the beautiful Phou Khou Khouey National Protected Area, known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes. We make stops along the way to take in the lush greenery, forested hills, and occasional glimpses of wildlife.
In the later part of the day, we explore the mystical Buddha Caves, nestled in the heart of the countryside. These ancient caves are filled with statues of Buddha and provide a sense of serenity and connection to the spiritual history of Laos. For those who are up for more adventure, there are excellent off-road areas nearby to explore, offering a taste of Laos’ rugged terrain. Our day ends at the Thakek Travel Lodge, where we rest and enjoy a well-deserved meal.
DAY 2: PAKXANE MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO LAK XAO
Today, we embark on a journey from Pakxane to Lak Xao. The ride takes us through scenic routes that highlight the natural beauty of Laos, including rolling hills, lush forests, and picturesque villages. We take our time, stopping frequently to explore points of interest from the old French colonial days. The atmosphere here is rich with history, and we take in the architectural remnants that reflect the bygone era of French influence in Laos.
We also spend some time exploring the cultural aspects of the region, visiting small local markets and interacting with the friendly villagers who are always eager to share their stories. The ride is a perfect mix of relaxed cruising and off-road excitement, as we take detours to explore hidden trails and scenic viewpoints. Our day concludes with a stay at the famous Hotel Pakse, where we can relax and prepare for the challenging trails ahead.
DAY 3: LAK XAO MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO BUALAPHA
Today marks the beginning of the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail (HCMT) portion of our journey. We depart Lak Xao and head towards Bualapha, navigating through a series of jungle trails that are steeped in history. This is where the adventure truly begins, as we ride deeper into the heart of Laos, crossing rugged terrain that was once used as a vital supply route during the Vietnam War.
The off-road trails are challenging, with steep ascents, river crossings, and dense jungle paths that will test our riding skills. Along the way, we come across old war remnants, including bomb craters and abandoned military equipment, which serve as a reminder of the turbulent history of the region. We take breaks to explore the jungle and learn more about the historical significance of the trail. As the day progresses, we reach Bualapha, where we settle in for the night, surrounded by the quiet of the jungle.
DAY 4: BUALAPHA MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO XEPON/DONG
We continue our journey deeper along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, riding through dense forests and remote landscapes. The trail becomes increasingly challenging, with narrow paths, steep climbs, and muddy sections that require focus and determination. This part of the journey is all about pushing our limits and embracing the thrill of off-road riding.
As we ride further into the jungle, we pass through small, isolated villages where time seems to stand still. The villagers greet us warmly, and we take the opportunity to learn about their way of life, which has remained largely unchanged for generations. The ride is physically demanding, but the sense of adventure and the stunning views make it all worthwhile. By the end of the day, we arrive at Xepon/Dong, where we rest and reflect on the incredible journey so far.
DAY 5: XEPON MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO SEKONG
Today’s ride takes us further along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, with a mix of off-road trails and dirt paths that wind through the jungle. The terrain is varied, with sections of rocky paths, river crossings, and dense vegetation that challenge our riding skills. We take our time, enjoying the ride and stopping to explore interesting spots along the way.
In the afternoon, we reach Sekong, where we check into a modern hotel for a comfortable night’s rest. After days of riding through the jungle, the comforts of the hotel are a welcome change. We enjoy a delicious dinner and take the evening to relax and recharge for the next leg of our journey.
DAY 6: SEKONG MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO ATTAPEU
Our journey continues as we ride from Sekong to Attapeu, following the final stretch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. This leg of the journey takes us through remote areas near the borders with Cambodia and Vietnam, offering a unique glimpse into the history and natural beauty of this region. The trails are narrow and winding, with plenty of opportunities for off-road exploration.
Along the way, we come across historical war relics, including abandoned bunkers and other remnants of the Vietnam War. The sense of history is palpable, and we take time to appreciate the significance of the places we pass through. The day ends in Attapeu, where we rest and prepare for our next destination.
DAY 7: ATTAPEU MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO CHAMPASAK
Today, we ride across the famous Bolaven Plateau, an area known for its stunning landscapes and rich agricultural heritage. The plateau is home to numerous coffee plantations, and we take the opportunity to visit some of these farms, learning about the coffee-making process and tasting some of the best coffee Laos has to offer.
We continue our journey towards Champasak, where we visit Wat Phou, an ancient Angkor-era temple that is considered one of Laos’ most important historical sites. The temple is set against the backdrop of Mount Phu Kao, and the views from here are breathtaking. We spend time exploring the temple complex, taking in the intricate carvings and learning about its history. Our day ends in Champasak, where we relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this charming town.
DAY 8: CHAMPASAK MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO SAVANAKHET
After departing Champasak, we ride along a mix of tarmac and off-road trails, following Route 13 along the Mekong River towards Savannakhet. The ride is scenic, with beautiful views of the river and the surrounding countryside. We make stops along the way to explore small villages and interact with the locals, who are always eager to share their stories and offer a warm welcome.
Savannakhet is the fifth largest city in Laos and sits just across the river from Mukdahan, Thailand. Upon arrival, we take time to explore the city, visiting local markets and enjoying the vibrant atmosphere. The evening is spent celebrating our journey, with excellent food, lodging, and even the option to try our luck at one of the local casinos.
DAY 9: SAVANAKHET MOTORCYCLE TOUR TO THAKHEK
Continuing north, we ride from Savannakhet to Thakhek, following off-road sections that run parallel to Route 13 along the Mekong. The ride is a mix of scenic riverfront trails and inland paths that take us through beautiful countryside and small rural communities. We take breaks to explore interesting spots, enjoy the views, and capture the beauty of Laos on camera.
The ride is relaxed, allowing us to fully appreciate the natural beauty of the region. By the end of the day, we arrive in Thakhek, where we rest and prepare for our final ride back to Vientiane.
DAY 10: THAKHEK MOTORCYCLE TOUR BACK TO VIENTIANE
On our final day, we ride from Thakhek back to Vientiane, bringing our epic adventure through southern Laos to a close. The route takes us along a mix of tarmac and off-road trails, with beautiful views of the Mekong River and the surrounding countryside. As we approach Vientiane, we reflect on the incredible journey we’ve experienced, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the memories we’ve made along the way.
Once back in Vientiane, we return the bikes and take time to wind down and celebrate the completion of our adventure. We hope you’ve enjoyed the ride of a lifetime and leave with unforgettable memories of Laos.
