The Dao Lù Gang people of Mẫu Sơn believe that the best beginnings happen before the sun rises. That’s why, while the entire village is fast asleep, the bride dons her traditional attire at her parents’ home, departs between 1 and 2 a.m., and arrives at her new home just as dawn begins to break.
Along with her dowry, the bride brings two beautifully embroidered outfits, adorned with vibrant threads. The more layers she wears, the more prosperity it symbolizes. The grand wedding procession includes a lively drum and trumpet performance, accompanied by a large gathering of relatives from both families. According to tradition, the groom is not allowed to see the bride’s face until all the wedding rituals are completed, at which point her veil is finally lifted.
One particularly unique custom of the Dao wedding is the post-ceremony treat for guests—a small cup of rice wine and a piece of boiled pig liver, a special tradition passed down through generations.
