01

DAY 01: HOI AN – THANH MY – HO CHI MINH ROAD – A LUOI

Riding Time 6–7 hours

Approximate Distance: 210–230 km
Riding Time: 6–7 hours
Meals: Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel / Guesthouse in A Luoi

Your Central Vietnam motorbike adventure begins in Hoi An.

After meeting your motorcycle guide, there will be a short tour briefing, motorcycle familiarisation and safety check before we leave the old trading town behind and ride toward the western mountains.

Within a short distance, the busy coastal atmosphere begins to disappear.

We travel through peaceful countryside dotted with rice fields, farming villages and small local roads before the landscape gradually rises toward the foothills of the Truong Son Mountains.

The ride continues toward Thanh My, an important gateway to the western mountain region.

HOI AN MOTORBIKE TOUR TO A LUOI VIA THANH MY & HO CHI MINH ROAD

From here, we join sections of the legendary Ho Chi Minh Road, where the character of the journey changes completely.

Traffic becomes increasingly sparse while forested mountains, river valleys and sweeping bends create some of Central Vietnam’s most enjoyable motorcycle riding.

The route passes through areas inhabited by ethnic minority communities whose villages are scattered throughout the Truong Son Range.

There will be regular stops along the way for coffee, photography and opportunities to experience rural life beyond Vietnam’s major tourist centres.

After lunch at a local restaurant, continue north through increasingly remote landscapes toward A Luoi Valley.

Depending on weather, road conditions and the riding ability of the group, your guide may introduce a few countryside tracks or easy dirt sections to add an extra sense of adventure.

We arrive in A Luoi in the late afternoon.

Check into the hotel before enjoying dinner and a relaxed evening in this peaceful mountain town.

Today’s Highlights:

Hoi An Countryside – Thanh My – Truong Son Mountains – Ho Chi Minh Road – Ethnic Minority Villages – A Luoi Valley

02

DAY 02: A LUOI – HO CHI MINH ROAD – DAKRONG – KHE SANH

Riding Time 5–6 hours

Approximate Distance: 160–190 km
Riding Time: 5–6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel in Khe Sanh

Wake to the cooler mountain air of A Luoi before continuing north along one of the most atmospheric sections of the Ho Chi Minh Road.

Today’s ride is all about open roads, forest-covered mountains and the feeling of travelling deep through Vietnam’s western highlands.

Long sweeping bends follow the contours of the Truong Son Range as the road passes quiet valleys, river crossings and scattered mountain communities.

Unlike Vietnam’s busy coastal highways, traffic here is often remarkably light, allowing riders to settle into the rhythm of the road and enjoy the surrounding landscapes.

This remote region carries enormous historical significance.

A LUOI MOTORBIKE TOUR TO KHE SANH VIA HO CHI MINH ROAD & DAKRONG

During the Vietnam War, the mountains formed part of the wider network of roads, paths and logistical routes known collectively as the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Today, however, the forests have returned and peaceful communities have developed along a route that has become one of Vietnam’s most fascinating motorcycle journeys.

Continue toward Dakrong, an important mountain junction connected historically with Route 9 and the western trail network.

After lunch, the ride continues toward Khe Sanh.

Visit the historic Khe Sanh Combat Base

In the afternoon, visit the historic Khe Sanh Combat Base, associated with one of the best-known military campaigns of the Vietnam War.

The site includes the former Ta Con airfield area together with exhibitions, military remnants and views across the surrounding hills.

Rather than seeing Khe Sanh as an isolated battlefield, your guide will help place the area within the broader story of Route 9, the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the former DMZ.

After the visit, take a short ride into Khe Sanh town.

Check into your hotel and enjoy dinner followed by an easy evening after another rewarding day in the mountains.

03

DAY 03: KHE SANH – ROUTE 9 – DMZ – VINH MOC TUNNELS – HUE

Riding Time 5–6 hours plus sightseeing

Approximate Distance: 190–210 km
Riding Time: 5–6 hours plus sightseeing
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
Accommodation: Hotel in Hue

Today offers one of the most historically fascinating stages of the tour. After breakfast, leave Khe Sanh and begin riding east along Route 9, a strategically important road during the Vietnam War. As we descend from the western mountains toward the plains of Quang Tri Province, the scenery gradually changes. The forested highlands give way to villages, agricultural landscapes and increasingly open countryside. Throughout the morning, your guide will explain how Route 9 connected Khe Sanh, the western mountain areas and the former Demilitarized Zone, helping bring together many of the places visited during the previous two days.

Continue toward the Ben Hai River and Hien Luong Bridge, close to the former 17th Parallel. Following the 1954 Geneva Agreements, the Ben Hai River became part of the temporary military demarcation line separating North and South Vietnam. Today the river is peaceful, making it difficult to imagine the political tension and military importance once associated with this narrow stretch of countryside.

The Hien Luong Bridge

After exploring the historical area, continue toward the coast and the remarkable Vinh Moc Tunnels. Vinh Moc offers a very different perspective on wartime history. The underground network was developed to protect local residents from intense bombardment, eventually becoming a subterranean community containing family living areas and other essential spaces. Walking through the tunnels provides an extraordinary insight into the resilience, ingenuity and everyday survival of local communities during the conflict.

After leaving Vinh Moc, the journey turns south toward Hue.

The pace becomes more relaxed as we approach Vietnam’s former imperial capital.

Arrive in Hue during the late afternoon and check into the hotel.

The evening is free to explore the city, stroll beside the Perfume River or discover Hue’s famous regional cuisine.

04

DAY 04: HUE – IMPERIAL HERITAGE – LANG CO – HAI VAN PASS – HOI AN

Riding Time 4–5 hours plus sightseeing

Approximate Distance: 140–160 km
Riding Time: 4–5 hours plus sightseeing
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

The final day combines Vietnamese heritage with one of the most famous motorcycle roads in Southeast Asia.

After breakfast, spend part of the morning exploring Hue’s extraordinary imperial legacy.

Depending on the interests of the group and the riding schedule, we may visit either the Hue Imperial Citadel or one of the impressive royal tombs situated outside the city.

Hue Imperial City

As the former capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, Hue remains one of Vietnam’s most historically important cultural destinations.

After sightseeing, get back on the motorcycles and begin the journey south.

Leaving Hue behind, we ride through countryside and lagoon landscapes before approaching Lang Co, a spectacular coastal area framed by mountains and the sea.

Enjoy lunch in the area before preparing for the final major riding highlight of the adventure – the legendary Hai Van Pass.

The legendary Hai Van Pass

The road climbs steadily from the coast, twisting along the mountainside with spectacular views across Lang Co Bay, forest-covered mountains and the East Sea.

Its combination of sweeping corners, mountain scenery and dramatic coastline has made Hai Van one of Vietnam’s most celebrated motorcycle roads.

Take time at the summit for photographs before descending toward Da Nang.

From here, continue south along the coast and through the countryside toward Hoi An.

Arrive back in Hoi An during the late afternoon, bringing four unforgettable days of mountain riding, historic discovery and Central Vietnamese adventure to an end.

Return the motorcycles and say goodbye to your guide.

05

WHY CHOOSE THIS HO CHI MINH TRAIL & DMZ MOTORBIKE TOUR?

This itinerary is designed for riders who want to experience several very different sides of Central Vietnam within a relatively short journey.

One day you are riding through remote mountain valleys on the Ho Chi Minh Road; the next you are standing at locations that played a major role in twentieth-century history.

The journey then finishes among the imperial heritage of Hue and spectacular coastal scenery of the Hai Van Pass.

Instead of simply connecting famous destinations, the route tells a story.

It follows the changing landscapes of Central Vietnam from ancient trading towns to ethnic minority mountains, wartime corridors, former battlefields, imperial heritage and the coastline of the central region.

For riders with limited time who want a meaningful combination of adventure, history and culture, this is one of the most rewarding short motorcycle tours available from Hoi An.
