Tour Overview & Highlights

5 DAYS EXPEDITION

Leave Hanoi behind and ride deep into one of the most dramatic and least-explored corners of Northern Vietnam on this 5-Day Northeast Vietnam Motorbike Tour.

This compact but incredibly rewarding motorcycle adventure connects the pristine waters of Ba Be Lake with the wild mountain roads of Bao Lac, the spectacular switchbacks of Khau Coc Cha Pass, the historical landscapes of Pac Bo, and the extraordinary karst scenery of Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark.

The journey reaches its natural climax at Ban Gioc Waterfall, where the Quay Son River tumbles through towering limestone mountains along the Vietnam–China border. Nearby, we explore the underground world of Nguom Ngao Cave and experience the distinctive stone houses and Tay culture of Khuoi Ky Village. Ban Gioc is one of the signature natural attractions of Cao Bang, while Khuoi Ky is recognised for its centuries-old stone-house architecture and Tay cultural heritage.

Rather than returning to Hanoi on the main highway, the adventure continues through the peaceful landscapes of Bac Son Valley and Huu Lien, creating a rewarding circular route filled with mountain passes, ethnic villages, rice valleys and quiet country roads.

For riders searching for an alternative to the busy Ha Giang Loop, this is a journey into a quieter, wilder and culturally fascinating side of Northern Vietnam.

01

DAY 1: HANOI MOTORBIKE TOUR TO BA BE LAKE

Overnight Ba Be

Hanoi – Thai Nguyen – Bac Kan – Ba Be National Park
Approx. 220–240 km | 6–7 hours riding
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Your Northeast Vietnam motorbike adventure begins after breakfast with a tour briefing and motorcycle check in Hanoi.

Leaving the capital behind, we quickly escape the heavy traffic and enter the quieter countryside of northern Vietnam. Rice fields, tea plantations, small farming villages and forested hills gradually replace the urban landscape.

Rather than simply following the fastest highway, our guide will choose a combination of provincial roads and scenic backroads wherever conditions permit, giving you an early taste of rural Vietnam.

HANOI MOTORBIKE TOUR TO BA BE LAKE

As we travel farther north through Bac Kan Province, the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous. Winding roads lead us toward Ba Be National Park, home to one of Vietnam’s most beautiful natural freshwater lakes.

Ba Be Lake stretches through an extraordinary limestone landscape of forest-covered mountains, caves and Tay villages and has long been recognised for its exceptional natural value.

Ba Be National Park

Arriving in the late afternoon, we check into our accommodation near the lake. There should be time for a short walk through the village or simply to relax with a cold drink while looking back on our first day in the mountains.

Dinner is served with local specialities.

Riding Highlights:

Country roads • Mountain scenery • Tay villages • Ba Be National Park

02

DAY 2: BA BE – BAO LAC – KHAU COC CHA PASS – PAC BO – CAO BANG

Overnight Cao Bang City

Ba Be – Bao Lac – Khau Coc Cha – Pac Bo – Cao Bang City
Approx. 270–310 km | 7–9 hours including sightseeing
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is the longest and arguably most adventurous riding day of the tour.

BA BE MOTORBIKE TOUR TO CAO BANG VIA BAO LAC, KHAU COC CHA PASS, PAC BO

After an early breakfast, we leave Ba Be and head deeper into the northern mountains. The roads become narrower and increasingly dramatic as we ride towards Bao Lac, a remote mountain town surrounded by deep valleys and limestone peaks.

From Bao Lac, we tackle one of the photographic highlights of the journey: Khau Coc Cha Pass.

eds - 5-Day Fantastic Northeast Vietnam Motorbike Tour to Ba Be Lake, Cao Bang, and Lang Son

Carved into an immense mountainside, the pass is famous for its remarkable sequence of steep switchbacks climbing through spectacular limestone terrain. It is exactly the kind of road motorcycle travellers come to Northern Vietnam to experience.

This section demands concentration, but the rewards are extraordinary: remote valleys, rugged mountain walls and breathtaking viewpoints open up around almost every bend.

After leaving the Bao Lac region, we continue toward Pac Bo, one of Vietnam’s most significant historical sites.

Pac Bo is closely associated with President Ho Chi Minh, who returned to Vietnam in 1941 after decades abroad and established an important revolutionary base in this mountainous border region. The complex includes Coc Bo Cave, Lenin Stream and other historical landmarks connected with the revolutionary period.

After exploring the site, we ride through the peaceful border countryside toward Cao Bang.

By late afternoon or early evening, we arrive in Cao Bang City, where a comfortable hotel and well-earned dinner await.

Riding Highlights:

Remote mountain roads • Bao Lac • Khau Coc Cha switchbacks • Pac Bo historical site • Borderland scenery

03

DAY 3: CAO BANG – MAT THAN MOUNTAIN – NGUOM NGAO CAVE – BAN GIOC – KHUOI KY

Overnight Ban Gioc / Khuoi Ky

Cao Bang – Mat Than Mountain – Trung Khanh – Nguom Ngao Cave – Ban Gioc Waterfall – Khuoi Ky Village
Approx. 120–150 km | 5–6 hours riding & sightseeing
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After yesterday’s long mountain stage, Day 3 offers shorter riding distances but some of the most spectacular landscapes of the entire journey.

Leaving Cao Bang after breakfast, we ride into the extraordinary limestone formations of the Cao Bang countryside.

Our first major stop is Mat Than Mountain, also known as Angel Eye Mountain, an enormous limestone formation pierced by a natural circular opening. Surrounded by seasonal grasslands, lakes and towering karst peaks, this is one of Northeast Vietnam’s most remarkable photography locations.

Angel Eye Mountain

From here, we continue through quiet farming valleys towards Trung Khanh.

The roads twist between towering limestone formations, rice fields and small villages populated predominantly by Tay and Nung communities.

We then reach Nguom Ngao Cave, an impressive limestone cave system famous for its intricate stalactites and stalagmites. The cave extends for several kilometres underground, although only selected areas are normally accessible to visitors.

After exploring the cave, it is only a short ride to the day’s headline attraction:

Ban Gioc Waterfall 1 - 5-Day Fantastic Northeast Vietnam Motorbike Tour to Ba Be Lake, Cao Bang, and Lang Son
Ban Gioc Waterfall

Set against a backdrop of magnificent limestone mountains, Ban Gioc is one of Southeast Asia’s most spectacular waterfalls. The Quay Son River divides into broad tiers before plunging over the limestone cliffs beside the Vietnam–China border.

Depending on conditions and available time, guests may take a traditional bamboo raft closer to the waterfall.

Later, we ride the short distance to Khuoi Ky Village.

This centuries-old Tay community is famous for its distinctive stone houses, yin-yang tiled roofs, stone walls and traditional architecture. The village offers a fascinating glimpse into a culture in which stone has both practical and spiritual significance.

Tonight we stay in the Ban Gioc area, surrounded by mountains and the quiet atmosphere of rural Cao Bang.

Riding Highlights:

Cao Bang Geopark • Angel Eye Mountain • Nguom Ngao Cave • Ban Gioc Waterfall • Tay culture

04

DAY 4: BAN GIOC MOTORBIKE TOUR TO BAC SON, LANG SON

Overnight Bac Son, Lang Son Province

Ban Gioc – Quang Uyen – Dong Khe – That Khe – Bac Son Valley
Approx. 220–250 km | 6–7 hours riding
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Wake to the quiet atmosphere of Vietnam’s northeastern borderlands before beginning another spectacular day on the motorcycles.

Rather than racing south along major roads, today’s journey threads through the mountains of Cao Bang and Lang Son Provinces.

Small highways and secondary roads take us through limestone valleys, traditional villages, bamboo forests and cultivated farmland. Tourism gradually fades into the background, and the journey becomes about the simple rhythm of travelling through rural Vietnam on two wheels.

We pass through historic northeastern mountain country around Dong Khe and That Khe before turning towards Bac Son.

The landscape changes again as enormous limestone towers rise from broad agricultural valleys.

Bac Son Valley

Bac Son is particularly impressive when viewed from the surrounding mountains: villages and patches of rice fields form a natural mosaic across the valley floor.

The final stretch offers relaxed riding through peaceful farming communities before we reach our accommodation.

After checking in, enjoy a local dinner and a quiet evening in the mountains.

Riding Highlights:

Cao Bang backroads • Karst mountains • Rural villages • Lang Son countryside • Bac Son Valley

05

DAY 5: BAC SON – HUU LIEN – HANOI

Bac Son – Huu Lien – Thai Nguyen Countryside – Hanoi
Approx. 180–220 km | 5–6 hours riding
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Our final morning begins among the spectacular limestone mountains of Bac Son.

After breakfast, we ride towards Huu Lien, another beautiful and relatively little-visited corner of Lang Son Province.

The landscape is a patchwork of jungle-covered limestone mountains, valleys, lakes, agricultural land and small ethnic villages. Depending on weather and road conditions, our guide may incorporate smaller country lanes or easy dirt tracks to make the final day’s riding even more interesting.

This is an ideal finale to the tour: scenic enough to remain memorable, but generally more relaxed than the demanding mountain sections around Bao Lac and Cao Bang.

After lunch at a local restaurant, we gradually leave the highlands behind and ride through the northern countryside toward Hanoi.

Traffic increases as we approach the capital, and our guide will carefully lead the group back to our finishing point.

BAC SON MOTORBIKE BACK TO HANOI VIA HUU LIEN

Arrival in Hanoi is expected in the late afternoon.

Five days earlier we left one of Southeast Asia’s busiest cities. We return having ridden through freshwater lakes, towering limestone ranges, historical borderlands, cascading waterfalls and some of the most remote communities of Northeast Vietnam.

Tour ends in Hanoi.

Riding Highlights:

Bac Son Valley • Huu Lien countryside • Optional backroads • Northern villages • Return to Hanoi

06

WHAT MAKES THIS TOUR SPECIAL?

07

A Different Side of Northern Vietnam

Many motorcycle travellers automatically think of Ha Giang when planning a northern Vietnam ride.

This route offers something different.

Here, the journey combines Ba Be, Bao Lac, Cao Bang, Ban Gioc and Bac Son into one highly varied adventure, with fewer heavily touristed riding sections and a strong combination of landscape, history and local culture.

08

Spectacular Mountain Riding

Khau Coc Cha provides the technical mountain drama, while countless smaller passes and country roads create a constantly changing riding experience.

09

Nature on an Epic Scale

Within just five days riders encounter:

Ba Be Lake, limestone forests, towering karst mountains, mysterious caves, the emerald Quay Son River, Ban Gioc Waterfall and the enormous valleys of Bac Son.

10

Meaningful Cultural Encounters

Rather than simply riding through villages, the itinerary allows time to understand the Tay and Nung communities that have shaped this region for generations.

11

History Along the Borderlands

Pac Bo adds a fascinating historical dimension to the journey and makes the route more than simply a scenic motorcycle ride.

12

RIDING CONDITIONS & DIFFICULTY

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging

This tour is most suitable for riders who already have motorcycle experience.

Expect a mixture of:

  • Paved mountain roads

  • Narrow rural roads

  • Tight switchbacks

  • Steep mountain sections

  • Broken or uneven road surfaces

  • Village tracks

  • Optional dirt and light off-road sections

  • Possible mud, gravel or slippery surfaces after rain

Road conditions in Vietnam’s northern mountains may change rapidly due to weather, construction or landslides. Even roads normally considered good can occasionally contain unexpected obstacles, so riders should approach blind corners cautiously and ride conservatively.

The exact route may therefore be adjusted by the tour leader according to weather, rider ability and local road conditions.

13

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Motorcycle Licence

International travellers must carry the correct motorcycle licence and documentation legally recognised in Vietnam.

Riders should confirm licence and International Driving Permit requirements before arrival, as requirements depend on the licence-issuing country and applicable international conventions.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance covering motorcycle riding of the selected engine capacity is strongly recommended and may be required for participation.

Weather & Route Changes

Northern Vietnam is mountainous.

Heavy rain, fog, roadworks or landslides can occasionally make planned sections unsafe or inaccessible.

The tour guide therefore reserves the right to modify the route where necessary for safety without reducing the overall spirit of the journey.

Riding Safety

Riders must follow the tour leader’s safety instructions and ride within their personal ability.

Speed is never the objective of this tour.

The experience comes from the landscape, roads, communities and freedom of travelling through remote Vietnam by motorcycle.

14

BEST TIME TO RIDE

The route can be operated during much of the year, although the character of the landscape changes significantly with the seasons.

March – May

Generally pleasant temperatures, green landscapes and excellent mountain riding conditions.

September – November

One of the most attractive periods for Northeast Vietnam, with comfortable temperatures, clearer skies and colourful agricultural landscapes.

December – February

Possible but considerably colder, particularly around Bao Lac and Cao Bang. Warm riding equipment is recommended.

June – August

Spectacular green scenery but also Vietnam’s wetter season. Heavy rainfall can cause slippery roads, landslides and route changes.

15

This tour is ideal for:

  • Experienced adventure motorcyclists

  • Couples or groups of riding friends

  • Motorcycle clubs

  • Photographers

  • Adventure travellers

  • Riders who have already completed Ha Giang and want somewhere new

  • Travellers interested in ethnic cultures
