3-Day Northwest Vietnam Offroad Motorcycle Tour to Ta Xua via Bo Am Hot-Springs, Mai Chau, Tram Tau

The city is only beginning to wake when we leave Hanoi and point the bikes west. The first kilometres allow everyone to settle into the rhythm of Vietnamese traffic before the skyline opens and the limestone foothills of Hoa Binh begin to rise ahead.

Our first meaningful stop is the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant, one of the landmark engineering projects on the Da River. Construction began in 1979 with assistance from the former Soviet Union. Beyond producing electricity, the complex has played an important role in flood regulation and the economic development of northern Vietnam. Standing above the immense reservoir offers riders an early sense of the scale of the mountains and river systems we are about to explore.

From Hoa Binh, we leave the main highway and enter a quieter world of Muong villages, bamboo groves and rice fields bordered by buffalo paths. The route leads toward Thung Waterfall, hidden in the highlands near Van Son and Lung Van. Water tumbles through forested rock into clear natural pools, while the surrounding landscape remains cool, green and remarkably peaceful. The wider area is also known for terraced fields, limestone caves and the protected forests around Ngoc Son–Ngo Luong Nature Reserve.

We then climb into Lung Van, often called the “Cloud Valley.” Located at around 1,000 metres above sea level, this mountain basin is considered one of the cultural heartlands of the Muong people. Traditional stilt houses rest among rice terraces, fruit gardens and folded limestone peaks. When the mist moves through the valley, villages appear and disappear between layers of mountain cloud.

After a local lunch, we follow DT432B, a remote and beautifully twisted road of sharp curves, broken surfaces and occasional gravel. It is not yet the hardest offroad of the tour, but it delivers a genuine adventure ride through countryside rarely visited by international travellers.

The final section crosses the greater Mai Chau region before reaching Chieng Yen in Son La. We finish beside Bo Am Hot Spring in Phu Mau village, where naturally warm water rises in a peaceful valley inhabited by ethnic Thai communities. After a long day in the saddle, a hot soak feels less like a luxury and more like a reward honestly earned.

Morning in Chieng Yen begins slowly: mist rising from the valley, smoke curling from kitchen roofs and the sounds of farm work drifting across the fields. Once the motorcycles have been inspected, we leave the comfort of the hot-spring village and enter one of the most remote sections of the journey.

The route toward Hang Mieng follows a flexible offroad line selected according to weather and recent trail reports. It may include narrow concrete lanes, rocky climbs, shallow stream crossings, red-soil dirt tracks and wild trails cutting through bamboo forest and secondary jungle.

This is where the tour changes character. Riders spend more time standing on the foot pegs, allowing the motorcycle to move beneath them and working through each technical section without rushing. In dry weather, the trail may be dusty and loose. After rain, the same ground can become MUDDY ROADS, where balance, smooth throttle control and teamwork matter far more than speed.

Remote Thai and Muong settlements appear between the hills, providing an unfiltered view of mountain life shaped by rice cultivation, livestock, forests and the seasonal rhythm of the Da River.

We eventually reach Hang Mieng Temple, a sacred historical and cultural site situated on Dau Rong Mountain beside the Da River. Local tradition connects the temple with a woman who transported provisions along the river and lost her life when her boat sank during a storm. The legend reflects the historic importance—and danger—of the Da River, which served mountain communities as a major transport corridor long before modern roads reached the region.

From the temple, we continue toward Van Yen Ferry Terminal. Rolling the motorcycles onto the local ferry becomes one of the most memorable moments of the day. The engines fall silent, the pace slows and the broad river opens between layers of forested mountains.

On the opposite bank, beautiful winding roads take us toward Bac Yen, where we refuel before beginning the final ascent. The climb to Ta Xua delivers tight switchbacks, exposed corners, steep gradients and increasingly dramatic views.

Fog may arrive with little warning, while clear weather reveals deep valleys and serrated ridgelines. By late afternoon, we reach the Ta Xua highlands, renowned for cloud seas, old tea country and Hmong mountain settlements. Watching the clouds drift below the road provides a fitting finale to an unforgettable EPIC RIDE.

We start before sunrise because today is both the longest and most demanding stage of the loop.

When conditions are favourable, the viewpoints around Ta Xua reveal a vast white sea of clouds filling the valleys below. January to March is considered the strongest cloud-hunting period, although mountain weather never offers guarantees. After breakfast and a detailed safety briefing, we turn away from the regular road to Bac Yen and ride toward Xim Vang.

The narrow road winds through Hmong villages, ancient hawthorn trees and steep highland farms. Xim Vang is celebrated for some of the most impressive terraced fields in the Bac Yen highlands. During the planting season, the terraces reflect the sky; later in the year, they become vast green and golden stairways carved into the mountain slopes. The local Hmong community continues to preserve traditional farming practices, music, clothing and seasonal customs closely connected with the land.

Beyond Xim Vang begins the tour’s signature offroad motorcycle route toward Tram Tau. This is not a fixed, all-weather road. Depending on maintenance and recent rainfall, riders may encounter broken concrete, deep ruts, loose stones, narrow single trails, forest shade, steep descents and long dirt sections.

In good conditions, the route is a pure adventure ride through mountains where there are few vehicles, few signs and almost no tourism infrastructure. In wet conditions, however, the clay surface can become extremely slippery and landslide risks may make the crossing unsafe. The guide therefore holds final authority to alter the route or return via Bac Yen when necessary. Official local information describes the wider Tram Tau region as highly mountainous, with narrow roads, deep ravines and many rough or deteriorated inter-village sections.

After conquering the wild tracks, we descend into Tram Tau for a well-earned break and lunch. The journey then follows DT174 toward Nghia Lo, where the high mountains gradually open into the broad Muong Lo basin.

Nghia Lo is closely associated with the culture of the Thai people, whose villages, rice fields and traditional stilt houses have shaped this fertile valley for generations. The gentler landscape provides a striking contrast with the raw mountain terrain behind us.

The final ride to Hanoi is mainly paved. It requires patience and fatigue management rather than advanced technical skill. We regroup regularly and return to the capital in the early evening—tired, dusty and carrying the unmistakable satisfaction of completing a genuinely demanding Northwest Vietnam EPIC RIDE.

How difficult is this three-day motorcycle tour?

This is an advanced offroad motorcycle tour. Its difficulty comes not only from the distance but also from steep slopes, changing road surfaces, loose rocks, mud, narrow trails and the long final riding day. Participants should already be comfortable riding a manual motorcycle on unsealed roads.

Do you measure the tour’s difficulty by the number of days?

No. We do not evaluate the challenge by the number of days alone. A short tour can be extremely demanding when it includes technical offroad sections, steep passes, muddy roads and long hours in the saddle. This three-day route is more challenging than many longer paved tours.

Is this tour suitable for beginner riders?

It is not recommended for complete beginners. Riders should have previous experience with manual motorcycles and preferably some experience on gravel, dirt tracks or offroad terrain.

What motorcycles are recommended?

Lightweight dual-sport motorcycles such as the Honda CRF250L, Honda CRF300L, Kawasaki KLX250 or similar models are the most suitable. Heavy adventure motorcycles are not recommended for the narrow and potentially muddy sections between Xim Vang and Tram Tau.

Can a passenger join as a pillion rider?

Pillion riding is not recommended on the most technical route. The steep trails, mud and broken surfaces significantly increase the risk when carrying a passenger. A support vehicle or alternative paved itinerary should be arranged for non-riders.

Do we ride to the actual summit of Ta Xua?

The motorcycle route reaches the Ta Xua highland area, mountain roads and accessible viewpoints. It does not reach the true trekking summit of the Ta Xua range. Reaching the highest summit requires a separate multi-day trekking expedition. 

Are cloud seas guaranteed in Ta Xua?

No. Cloud formation depends on temperature, humidity, wind and overnight weather. January to March generally offers the strongest cloud-hunting conditions, but no operator can guarantee a cloud sea on a particular morning. 

What happens when the offroad trail is too muddy?

The guide will inspect local conditions and choose a safer alternative. The route may return through Bac Yen or connect with Nghia Lo using more stable roads. Safety always takes priority over completing a particular track.

What is the best time to take this tour?

October to April generally provides more stable riding conditions. January to March is especially attractive for Ta Xua cloud hunting. The rainy months can create beautiful green landscapes but also bring mud, reduced visibility and landslide risks.

What type of accommodation is included?

Accommodation is normally arranged in locally operated homestays or simple mountain lodges. Rooms are clean and comfortable but may not offer the facilities of city hotels. Staying locally allows riders to experience regional food, architecture and family life more closely.

Can dietary requirements be accommodated?

Vegetarian meals, food allergies and common dietary requests can normally be managed with advance notice. However, choices are more limited in isolated mountain communities, so travellers should provide clear information before departure.

Is a support vehicle available?

A support vehicle can be arranged for private groups, although it cannot follow every narrow dirt trail or single-track section. The vehicle will use the nearest accessible road and reconnect with the riders at agreed meeting points.

How much luggage should riders carry?

Riders should carry only essential personal items in a small waterproof bag. Large suitcases should be stored in Hanoi or transported by a support vehicle. Lightweight luggage improves balance and motorcycle control on steep or muddy terrain.

What riding equipment is required?

A quality helmet, motorcycle boots, gloves, knee protection, elbow or body armour and an appropriate riding jacket are strongly recommended. Waterproof clothing and a warm layer are also important because temperatures and visibility can change quickly at higher elevations.

Can the itinerary change during the tour?

Yes. Mountain conditions may require adjustments due to rain, fog, landslides, ferry schedules, road construction or local restrictions. The guide may modify the trail while preserving the overall quality and spirit of the adventure.
