MARBLE MOUNTAINS

Just 10 km south of Da Nang and 20 km north of Hoi An in Central Vietnam is a small group of 5 “mountains” known the world over as the Marble Mountains. They are five marble and limestone hills situated in the south of Da Nang City in Vietnam. They are often translated as Mountains of Five Elements, which means Thuy (water), Moc (wood), Hoa (fire), Kim (metal) and Tho (earth).

Marble Mountains overview

There are numerous tunnels and cave entrances here, which make it more alluring to the tourists. One of the caves had two large statues of gods guarding the entrance. It is possible to climb the summits but also to abseil down the numerous holes into the cave palaces. Statues of Buddha are present in many caves. Since 1975 the Marble Mountains has gained popularity as one of the major Vietnam popular destinations.

The 156 step climb at the main entrance is not particularly difficult and offers some interesting views of shrines and stone-carved friezes on your way up; but beware, the stairs are made of marble and can be slippery. Make sure you are wearing comfy shoes cos it can be really rocky and slippery there.

Thuy Son has been exploited as a popular tourist resort because of its alluring beauty. Stone steps carved into the mountain lead to the Tam Thai Pagoda where Phat Di Lac is worshipped. At the back of the pagoda is Huyen Khong Cave. In the past, the pagoda paid tribute to Hindu and Buddhist gods and is now dedicated to Cham deities. Huyen Khong Cave was the base for Vietnamese revolutionaries during wartime.

The Marble Mountains are famous for traditional stone engraving activities. In Dong Hai village close to Thuy Son, 600 families chisel stone producing statues, jewelry, and artwork. Stone from the Marble Mountains has been exported to many countries. One of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam is located 2km from the mountains and 10km from Danang. It is Non-Nuoc Beach which is very convenient for visitors who want to go climbing and bathing.

This historic pilgrimage site is a must-see location for those interested in history, religion, and exploring! The distance between Hoi An and the mountain is 8km and it will take you a little more than 30 minutes. On this ride, you can see breath-taking views of the countryside and your knowledgable guide will be there to answer any questions you may have in our Central Vietnam Tours.
